Re:Sisters – Pioneering Women of Electronic Music

During 2021 under the theme ‘Wired Women’, NEoN is highlighting the contribution of female and nonbinary artists in shaping the digital and technology-driven arts sector.

So NEoN was delighted to be invited to work with Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) and MASH Cinema and be part of their amazing Re:Sisters programme, which tells the untold stories of electronic music’s female pioneers.

Kicking off the programme is the preview screening of the new documentary Sisters with Transistors, and earlier this week Donna Holford-Lovell, NEoNs Director, had the opportunity to meet with the films director Lisa Rovner and discuss inspirations, barriers and liberation.

Re:Sisters

DCA and MASH Cinema present a season of films celebrating the women who shaped and changed electronic music to its online streaming site, DCA at Home. The programme is built around a preview screening of the new documentary Sisters with Transistors and will also feature an online performance from Dundonian DJ and violin duo Kintra and a short film from Dundee-based female DJ collective Polka Dot Disco Club.

The programme continues on Sat 10 April with A Life in Waves, an exploration of the life and innovations of electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani, then Raw Chicks.Berlin, a documentary featuring 11 portraits of Berlin-based music producers, is available to stream from Sun 11 April. Modulations: Cinema for the Ear, also available on 11 April, is an archive documentary from 1998 that traces the evolution of electronic music. Stacey Lee’s debut feature Underplayed provides a portrait of gender, ethnic and sexual equality in dance music, streaming from Mon 12 April, alongside Polka Dot Disco Club’s short film, released especially for the Re:Sisters season.

Alice Black, Head of Cinema at DCA, said “We can’t wait to share this virtual showcase of film and events celebrating the stories of early female pioneers and new trailblazers in the electronic music world to our loyal audiences through DCA at Home. Our cinemas and nightclubs might be temporarily closed, but the beat goes on ”

Dan Brown of MASH Cinema said

“The aim of Re:Sisters is to champion the groundbreaking women who pioneered electronic music. Since the programme's inception, it has grown to include a wider exploration of women's experiences in the music industry and challenge inequalities. Expect portraits of influential musicians; bleeps and swooshes from modular synths; and an opportunity to dance around your screen in the comfort of your own home.”
